Romance from the Song of Songs

Do you have a favorite love song? Maybe one that drew you together as a couple and still holds special significance every time you hear it?

February is a month to focus on our love relationship with our spouses, to revisit those special songs that carry meaning for just the two of us.

That's how it's been for us lately as we've opened up the pages of scripture to the most beautiful of all songs: the Song of Solomon.

What we've found fascinating is the time, care, and senses involved in the love-making between the king and the Shulamite maiden (his bride) who's captured his attention and affection. This is indeed a wake-up call in the midst of busy schedules and the flurry of activity that comprises our daily routines.

Slowing down to savor each other has breathed new life into our intimacy, not just sexually, but in other areas of our relationship, too.

How fun it's been to periodically take a few ideas from Solomon and try them during our love making. Rose petals creating a path down the hallway, leading to the next surprise! A "banner" scarf enveloping us while we kiss. Paper hearts with special messages hidden around the house, each one suggesting a certain loving action. Feeding each other from a small fruit bowl. Spreading honey on each other's lips, then kissing deeply. And then of course, the tried and true chocolate . . .

Well, your imagination soon takes over thanks to Solomon's poetic passages that appeal to all the senses. With renewed vigor, you'll soon be tip-toeing through Cupid's garden (or Solomon's :) with freshness added to your love making.

Wherever you are in your relationship, turn to the most beautiful, meaningful, and timeless song from Solomon. Simply begin by reading the song together, then let the Spirit guide you!

Wrap up in the words, knowing that the more you invest in one another, the more likely your relationship will be a reflection of Christ's love for His Bride, the Church and the Church's response to Him, which after all is the ultimate goal of marriage (Ephesians 5:22-33).

What a glorious visual aid to the Church and to the world that God has provided in marriage! The more we ponder the significance of this analogy, the more care we'll take with our couple relationship. This lovely dance of husband and wife reflects the divine dance into which God longs to draw every person. Think of it--we can draw others to Christ as they observe the godly love within our marriages!

So, enjoy your love-making journey this month, starting with a song--the Song of Songs!
